Every coin has a published weight and fineness. We turn that into troy ounces of pure gold or silver (AGW / ASW), then multiply by today’s live metal price. That dollar figure is melt.
A 1921 Morgan and an 1881 Morgan hold the same silver (0.77344 oz). Mintmark and date do not change melt, so we list each type once. You still search by the name you know.
If you have a bag of worn 90% dimes, quarters, halves, or dollars, you can enter face value instead of counting coins. $1.00 face is figured at 0.715 oz of silver, which is how worn bags are usually counted. The type page also shows the mint weight if you are counting pieces.
