What “90% silver” means

US dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars struck for circulation through 1964 (and a few later silver issues) are 90% silver. A mint-state quarter holds 0.18084 oz. A worn bag is counted at 0.715 oz per $1.00 face because coins lose a little metal in circulation. Kennedy 40% halves (1965–1970) and war nickels are not 90% bag material — use those type pages instead.

Melt is the metal. A Barber quarter in high grade is often worth more than melt. A common 1964 Washington in a bag is usually near melt.
