Mexico gold 2 pesos (DOS PESOS) melt value

What this coin is

The Mexico gold 2 pesos is a tiny .900 gold coin. The reverse (or the wreath side, depending how you hold it) reads DOS PESOS — Spanish for two pesos. New buyers often think it is a charm or a button because it is only about 13 mm across. It is real gold: 1.6666 g at 90% fine, 0.04823 oz AGW (Banco de México figure).

What is written on the coin

Look for DOS PESOS, the Mexican eagle on cactus with snake, and a date. The 2 pesos does not use Hidalgo’s portrait; the value sits in a wreath. People type “dos pesos” because that is the legend, not “two dollar gold.”

Metal content (the melt spec)

Mint specification: 1.6666 grams at 90% fine, which is 0.04823 troy oz of pure gold (AGW). Formula: grams × fineness ÷ 31.1034768. Date and mintmark do not change that number. Melt today is $212.41 per coin at $4,404.10 gold.

Mintage

Struck for circulation 1919–1920 and 1944–1948, then official restrikes, many dated 1945. Original early dates can carry a collector premium; the common 1945-dated restrikes trade as small gold bullion. Melt is the same for originals and restrikes of this weight.

A little history

Mexico’s 1905 monetary reform set gold pesos at .900 fine, matching many European issues. Casa de Moneda de México (founded 1535, the oldest mint in the Americas) struck these as circulating gold, then as bullion restrikes. Hidalgo appears on the 2½, 5, and 10 pesos; the 2 pesos keeps the wreath.

How to tell you have this type

If the coin says DOS PESOS and is gold-colored and about dime-sized or smaller, this is the page. DOS Y MEDIO is the 2½ pesos (Hidalgo). CINCO / DIEZ / VEINTE are larger. Silver coins that say DOS PESOS are the 1921 independence 2 pesos, a different metal.
